Ethnic Press Awards -2017  Writer Kuru Aravinthan Ethnic Press Award Winner - 2017 President Canada Tamil Writers’ Association. “This is a recognition and celebration of their considerable contributions to our democracy and to the diverse fabric of our society. Today, we salute their contributions and recognize their struggles for human rights, equal opportunities, for peace and understanding, for justice and respect for all Canadians,” according to the official program of the 2017 Awards. Kuru Aravinthan - Writer, Teacher, Accountant Kuru Aravinthan was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Canada in 1988 as a refugee, fleeing from a civil war that only ended 2009. He began his writing career shortly after arriving to Canada and has published many articles, short stories, novels, movie screen plays and dramas over the past 25 years. His writings have won awards globally in Canada, France, the United Kingdom, India, and Sri Lanka. This includes the prestigious Tamil Information Award in 2012, Tamil Mirror Literary Award in 2014 and Canadian Tamil writers Association award in 2015. National Ethnic Press Awards - 2017, Canada Uthayan Award in 2019. He is also actively involved in the local community and volunteers for organizations such as the Canadian Tamil Writers Association (President), Ontario Tamil Teachers Association (Patron), Screen of Peel Community Association (President), Mahajana College Old Students Association (Mahajanan-Editor), and Nadeswara Old Students Association (Patron). He has taught Tamil as an international language instructor under the Toronto District School Board for the past 25 years. In 2013 he received the 20 Years of Volunteer Service Award from the Premier of Ontario in recognition of his voluntary services. Kuru’s publications and screenplays cover a wide variety of topics and issues ranging from scientific articles, fictional work on refugees, romance, family life, and Tamil culture. He is often able to captivate readers by drawing from his own personal experiences and vividly painting images of struggle, perseverance, and daily life. Some of his most popular pieces include: · Oor Addy Kanavarkaaka, which won the 1997 gold medal in the Canadian Uthayan newspaper Short Story contest. Uthayan has over 10,000 weekly readers in the Toronto community · Pen Ontru Kandaen, which won the Sri Lanka Veerakesary Magazine Short Story of the Year in 2000 · Submarine, a short Novel series in the Indian magazine Anandavikatan which has over 1 million weekly readers. It won the Short Novel category contest in 2001 for their 75th anniversary. · Sumai, which won first prize in CTR Radio 10th year anniversary short story contest 2007 · Appavin Kanamma which won the special award in Gandarvan short story contest 2008 · Ammaavin Pillikal a novel which won the Tamilnadu Yugamayini magazine award in 2009 · Thaiumaanaver, a novel which won the Indian monthly magazine ‘Kalaimagal’ Ramaratnam award in 2011 · Tamil Aram, a series of exercise books, audio songs, and videos used to teach children basic Tamil · Scripts for several Tamil films such as Sugam Sugame, Veali and Sivaranjani · Pariyari Maami, in 2013 which won the Gnanam Magazine short story contest. · Our Appa Our Magal Our Kaditham – Kuru’s Story made short film for Kaliner TV as ‘Uravum Unarvum’’ Governor’s Award - Ethnic Press Award Winner - 2017 · Kuru’s contribution to the literary world over the past 25 years in Canada has been immense. Roots and Shoots - CTWA- Editor  குரு அரவிந்தன் கனடா எழுத்தாளரான குரு அரவிந்தன் கணக்காளராகவும், ரொறன்ரோ கல்விச் சபையில் பகுதி நேர ஆசிரியராகவும் கடமை ஆற்றுகின்றார். சர்வதேசப் புகழ் பெற்ற, அதிக வாசகர்களைக் கொண்ட எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஒருவராக இருக்கும் குரு அரவிந்தன் கனடா எழுத்தாளர் இணையத்தின் தலைவராகவும், கனடா பீல் பிரதேச குடும்ப மன்றத்தின் தலைவராகவும், ஒன்ராறியோ தமிழ் ஆசிரியர் சங்கத்தின் காப்பாளராகவும் இருக்கின்றார், இவர் தன்னார்வத் தொண்டராக மட்டுமல்ல, இலக்கியத்திற்கான பல தங்கப் பதக்கங்களையும், விருதுகளையும் பெற்ற சாதனையாளராகவும் இருக்கின்றார். சிறந்த பத்திரிகையாளருக்கான ‘கவணர் விருதை 2017’ ஆம் ஆண்டும், ஒன்ராறியோ முதல்வரின் இலக்கியத்திற்கான விருதை 2019 ஆண்டும் பெற்றிருந்தார். இந்தியாவில் இருந்து வெளிவரும் ஆனந்தவிகடன், கலைமகள், யுகமாயினி போன்ற இதழ்களின் குறுநாவல் போட்டிகளில் பரிசுகளைப் பொற்ற இவர் இதுவரை ஏழு நாவல்களையும் ஐந்து சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்புக்களையும், மூன்று ஒலிப் புத்தகங்களையும் வெளியிட்டிருக்கின்றார். கனடிய தமிழ் சிறுவர் இலக்கியத்தின் முன்னோடியான இவர் சிறுவர்களுக்கான 'தமிழ் ஆரம்' பயிற்சி மலர்களையும், சிறுவர் பாடல்களையும், ஒலி, ஒளித்தட்டுக்களையும் வெளியிட்டிருக்கின்றார். மூன்று திரைப்படங்களுக்குத் திரைக்கதை வசனம் எழுதியுள்ள இவரது கல்கியில் வெளிவந்த, ‘ஒரு அப்பா ஒருமகள் ஒரு கடிதம்’ என்ற சிறுகதையை, ‘உறவும் உணர்வும்’ என்ற தலைப்பில் நாளைய இயக்குநர் நிகழ்ச்சியில் கலைஞர் தொலைக்காட்சிக்காகக் குறுந்திரைப் படமாக்கி இருக்கிறார்கள். விகடன் தீபாவளி மலர், விகடன் பவளவிழா மலர், விகடன் காதலர்தின மலர், விகடன் மிலேனியம் மலர், ஆனந்தவிகடன், கலைமகள், கல்கி, குமுதம், யுகமாயினி, கணையாழி, நந்தவனம் (தமிழ்நாடு), தாய்வீடு, தூறல், உதயன், ஈழநாடு, செந்தாமரை, கூர்கனடா, தளிர், தமிழர் தகவல், தமிழ் மிரர், ஈகுருவி, விளம்பரம், தமிழ் பார்வை (கனடா), தினக்குரல், வீரகேசரி, ஞானம் (இலங்கை) வெற்றிமணி(யேர்மனி), புதினம்(லண்டன்), உயிர்நிழல்(பாரிஸ்), வல்லினம் (மலேசியா), காற்றுவெளி (லண்டன்), பதிவுகள், திண்ணை, தமிழ் ஆதேஸ்(இணையம்), கரம்பொன்.நெட் போன்ற இதழ்களில் இவரது கதைகள் தொடர்ந்தும் வெளிவருகின்றன. ஆனந்தவிகடன் பவழவிழா ஆண்டில் பரிசு பெற்று 24 பக்கங்களில் வெளிவந்த இவரது நீர் மூழ்கி.. நீரில் மூழ்கி.. என்ற குறுநாவலுக்கு தமிழகத்தின் முன்னணி ஓவியர்கள் (மாருதி, ராமு, ஜெயராஜ், அர்ஸ், பாண்டியன்) ஐவர் படம் வரைந்திருப்பது இதுவரை எந்த ஒரு எழுத்தாளருக்கும் கிடைக்காத பாக்கியமாகும். பத்து லட்சம் பிரதிகளுக்கு மேல் விற்பனையாகும் ஆனந்தவிகடன் பத்திரிகையில் இக் குறுநாவல் வெளிவந்தது ஒரு சாதனை படைத்தது மட்டுமல்ல, ஈழத்தமிழருக்கு தமிழகத்தில் முதலில் கிடைத்த அங்கீகாரமுமாகும். 2016 யூன் மாதம் விகடன் இணைய இதழில் வெளிவந்த ஹரம்பி என்ற சிறுகதை மீண்டும் பல லட்சம் வாசகர்களைச் (2.5 மில்லியன்) சென்றடைந்தது பாராட்டுக்குரியது. காதலர் தினத்திற்காக இவர் தமிழில் எழுதிய வெவ்வேறு காதலர்தினக் கதைகள் இந்தியா, இலங்கை, பிரித்தானியா, ஜேர்மனி, கனடா ஆகிய ஐந்து நாடுகளில் ஒரே வருடம் பெப்ரவரி மாதம் காதலர் தினத்தில் வெளிவந்து எழுத்துலகில் ஒரு சாதனை படைத்திருந்தது. வேறு எந்த மொழியிலும் ஐந்து நாடுகளில் ஒரே எழுத்தாளரின் காதலர்தினக் கதைகள் ஒரே நேரத்தில் வெளிவந்ததற்கான ஆதாரம் இதுவரை இல்லை. மூன்று தமிழ் திரைப்படங்களுக்கு இவர் திரைக்கதை வசனம் எழுதியிருக்கின்றார். இவரது முள்வேலி என்ற சிறுகதை ‘வேலி’ என்ற பெயரிலும், 'சொல்லடி உன் மனம் கல்லோடி' என்ற நாவல் ‘சிவரஞ்சனி’ என்ற பெயரிலும் திரைப்படமாக்கப் பட்டுள்ளன. இவரது பல கதைகள் ஆங்கிலம், மலையாளம், கன்னடம், தெலுங்கு, பிரெஞ்சு, ஜேர்மன், சிங்களம் போன்ற பிறமொழிகளில் மொழி மாற்றம் செய்யப் பட்டிருக்கின்றன. |
